Panevėžio Energija, AB

A successful company since 1963, Panevėžio Energija AB is one of the largest energy companies in Lithuania. It operates in the energy sector in the towns and districts of Panevėžys, Kėdainiai, Rokiškis, Pasvalys, Kupiškis and Zarasai. The company supplies the residents of the region as well as other consumers with heat and hot water, sells the electricity it generates on the electricity exchange, and uses it for the company’s own needs. AB Panevėžio Energija ensures reliable and high-quality heat supply at reasonable prices, modernises heat production and transmission systems, introduces innovative technologies, carries out environmental protection projects and organises the provision of services to consumers. In 2022, the company employed 405 people; the operating income of Panevėžio Energija AB amounted to EUR 58 million.
 
The total installed capacity of the energy sources is 515.12 MW (476.88 MW installed heat capacity, 38.24 MW installed power generation capacity).
 
Panevėžio Energija AB produces heat at the Panevėžys power plant and 39 boiler houses with 120 different types of heat generation equipment: 14 steam boilers, 98 water heating boilers, 9 smoke-condensing economisers and one absorption heat pump.
 
Around 77% of heat is produced in boiler houses operated by Panevėžio Energija AB and the Panevėžys Thermal Power Plant, while around 23% is purchased from independent heat producers. About 750,000 MWh of heat is supplied to the grid. Sales from heat supplied are about 90% in the form of heating water and 10% in the form of steam. The largest group of district heating consumers is the residential sector (67%). The length of the heat networks operated by the company is 265 km, of which 154 km are reconstructed heat pipelines (58.3%).
 
Panevėžio Energija AB has the following power generation capacities: Panevėžys power plant – 35 MW, Panevėžys boiler house – 2.5 MW, Rokiškis boiler house – 0.1 MW and five solar power plants – 0.64 MW. Panevėžys power plant provides a reliable service to the Lithuanian electricity system, which requires it to be ready to produce electricity at all times. The Panevėžys power plant produces electricity for sale on the electricity exchange where power purchase prices are favourable. Other sources of electricity generation produce electricity for the technological needs of boiler plants.
 
Taking into account the main factors shaping the energy policy and Lithuania’s strategic energy goals, Panevėžio Energija AB continuously invests in the modernisation of its equipment, which allows an increase in the use of renewable energy sources in heat production and a reduction in air pollution, and ensures cheaper, greener and cleaner heat production. In ten years, the amount of greenhouse gases (CO2) emitted into the ambient air has been reduced from 92,000 tonnes to 23,000 tonnes.
 
Thanks to the efforts of heat suppliers and consumers, the central district heating system developed in the towns of the region operated by the company creates comfortable conditions for the population and brings environmental benefits to society.
 
TECHNICAL SOLUTIONS OF RECENT YEARS IN THE HEAT SECTOR, FROM PANEVĖŽIO ENERGIJA AB
 
  • The Rokiškis boiler house was reconstructed in 2015. Two 5.0-MW water heating boilers were built, each firing chopped wood, and a 2.5-MW condensing economiser was installed.
  • The Zarasai boiler house was reconstructed in 2016. The oil-fired boiler was replaced by two biofuel boilers of 1.5 MW and 2.5 MW, and a condensing economiser with 0.97 MW heat output.
  • In 2016, the Panevėžys boiler house (Pušaloto str.) was modernised. A 12-MW water heating boiler, technological equipment, smoke treatment and exhaust systems, and a covered biofuel storage area were built.
  • In 2017, a 3-MW thermal output condensing economiser was installed at the Panevėžys boiler house (Pušaloto Str.) to add 3 MW of thermal output to the existing biofuel-fired boiler.
  • In 2019, the Panevėžys boiler house (Pušaloto str.) was reconstructed. A biofuel-fired 8-MW water heating boiler and a 1.8-MW condensing economiser were built.
  • The Pasvalys boiler house was reconstructed in 2020. A 4-MW biofuel boiler and a 1-MW condensing economiser were built.
  • In 2020, the boiler house of the Panevėžys power plant was reconstructed. An 8-MW biofuel-fired water heating boiler and a 1.8-MW condensing economiser were built.
  • In 2021, a 1,500-kW absorption heat pump and a 150-kW solar photovoltaic power plant were installed in the Panevėžys boiler house (Pušaloto str.).
  • In 2022, a smoke filtration plant with ancillary equipment was built at the Academy’s boiler house (Kėdainiai district).
  • In 2023, four solar photovoltaic power plants with a total capacity of 0.487 MW were installed on the sites of the boiler houses in Kėdainiai, Rokiškis, Zarasai and Panevėžys.
  • In 2023, a 13-MW gas-fired water heating boiler and a 2-MW condensing economiser were built in the boiler house of the Panevėžys power plant.
  • In 2023, a 105-kW nominal capacity Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) plant was built at the Rokiškis boiler house.
 
In 2023, the construction of a biofuel-fired steam boiler with a capacity of 10 TPH started at the Rokiškis boiler house.
Panevėžio Energija AB plans to expand the Kėdainiai boiler house by building biofuel boilers with ORC equipment with a capacity of about 20 MW, to produce electricity. This would stabilise prices for heat consumers and avoid increasing greenhouse gas emissions.
 
In 2025, Panevėžio Energija AB plans to modernise the Panevėžys thermal power plant by building a biofuel steam boiler and using the existing steam turbine. The electricity generated by the biofuel would be sold on the electricity exchange and the heat generated in the process would be fed into the district heating network of Panevėžys. The modernisation of the power plant would increase the use of renewable resources, reduce environmental impact and reduce dependence on natural gas.
